iran’s population density

A very interesting way of graphically showing the population density, and hence the earthquake risk facing different parts of Iran (based on their vulnerability):

interesting grids! but what does it (population) have to do with the earthquake risk?

Hi Dina,

Thanks for your questions. Strictly speaking, when assessing the earthquake hazard in a given area, the population is a part of the equation (in addition to other factors). So for example (hypothetically) even if Tehran had fewer active faults than Boushehr, because of its population density it would still be prone to a much higher risk. Tehran is an obvious example, but this map is a cool way to put things into perspective for the rest of the country (other major cities, etc.).

hope you are doing well
